Sci-Fi Fans Banned From Bringing Dr. Who and Star Trek Memorabilia to RSC’s Hamlet

Leave the action figures and sci-fi memorabilia at home. That’s the message the Royal Shakespeare Company is sending to fans of David Tennant or Patrick Stewart who are headed to Stratford-upon-Avon for the RSC’s new production of “Hamlet.”

More Characters Emerge in Stolen Folio Mystery and Stories Begin to Diverge

The mystery of the stolen Durham First Folio is beginning to look more like watered-down Mickey Spillane novel than a play by William Shakespeare. 51-year-old Raymond Scott was arrested nearly two weeks ago after he turned up at the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D.C. with a copy of the First Folio. Scott claims he obtained the folio from a friend while visiting his fiancé in Cuba. Reporters recently tracked down the fiancé, a nightclub dancer from Havana, and the friend, a former bodyguard for Fidel Castro. The stories they told had many similarities. But, some potential discrepancies also emerged in the tale of how Raymond Scott came into possession of the First Folio.

Tom O’Bedlam, MP: British Parliament Considers Scrapping Elizabethan Law Banning ‘Lunatics’ and ‘Idiots’ from Holding Elected Office

“Ministers are considering scrapping ancient rules after complaints from mental health campaigners that they are discriminatory. Laws created in Elizabethan times define idiots as “incapable of gaining reason” and lunatics as capable of only periods of lucidity….The ancient laws also ban anyone sectioned under the Mental Health Act from putting themselves forward for election, even [...]

Suspect in Folio Theft Case Calls on Durham University to Sell Its Rare Books for Charity

Raymond Scott seems to be doing everything he can to stay in the media spotlight. The 51-year-old Englishman is at the center of an investigation into the 1998 theft of a Shakespeare First Folio from Durham University in northeast England. Late last week Scott introduced a new twist to the story by issuing an open letter to Durham University, calling on the school to sell its library of rare books, which he described as ‘redundant relics.’

Economic Woes Hurting Tourism in Stratford-upon-Avon

The weak U.S. dollar, coupled with tight credit, is negatively impacting the tourist trade in Stratford-upon-Avon. The downturn is being felt keenly by the 120-seat Waterside Theatre, which has seen a massive drop in visitors. The Waterside, which opened in December 2004, is designed to look like a traditional Elizabethan playhouse. The theatre hosts visiting theatre companies, musical productions and stand up comedians. The Waterside also includes the virtual reality Shakespearience tourist attraction.

Flamboyant Folio Theft Suspect Seems to Enjoy Spotlight

Rather than acting like a man facing serious legal trouble, Raymond Scott seems to be enjoying the media attention that has followed his arrest.
After being freed on bail, Scott was interviewed at the modest three-bedroom, semi-detached home, in Washington, Tyne and Wear, he shares with his elderly mother. Sporting a Cuban cigar and a glass [...]

Man Arrested Over Shakespeare Folio Theft Says He’s Innocent

A book dealer arrested for allegedly handling a stolen £15m Shakespeare First Folio has claimed the raid on his home was much ado about nothing. Raymond Scott, 51, was released on bail by Durham police after being quizzed over the first folio of a collection of The Bard’s works, which disappeared a decade ago from Durham University library. Eccentric Mr Scott, who lives with his 75-year-old mother Hannah in a modest terraced house, in Washington, Tyne and Wear, says the book he sold was not the stolen one. Mr Scott insists he acquired his copy of the folio legally from contacts in Cuba and, rather than selling it in a shady deal, tried to publicise his “discovery.”

Hast thou the pretty worm of Nilus there? - D.C. Theatre Puts the Snakes in Shakespeare

The Shakespeare Theatre Company of Washington, D.C. made an unusual casting choice for its current production of “Antony and Cleopatra.” Director Michael Kahn decided to use three 20-inch ball pythons to play the role of the asp that Cleopatra uses to commit suicide in the play’s final scene. The slithery, but non-poisonous, Shakespearean actors were [...]
