Shakespeareance tourist attraction in Stratford-upon-Avon

According to an article in the Sunday Mercury, the weak U.S. dollar, coupled with tight credit, is negatively impacting the tourist trade in Stratford-upon-Avon. It appears the strength of the British pound against the U.S. dollar means fewer Americans are visiting the UK.

The downturn is being felt keenly by the 120-seat Waterside Theatre, which has seen a massive drop in visitors. The Waterside, which opened in December 2004, is designed to look like a  traditional Elizabethan playhouse. The theatre hosts visiting theatre companies, musical productions and stand up comedians. The Waterside also includes the virtual reality Shakespearience tourist attraction.

Despite the drop in revenue, Waterside management says the theatre will stay open.

The Sunday Mercury quotes Stratford-upon-Avon Council leader Les Topham as saying, “This is very sad news for the whole town. We don’t want to see any of our tourist attractions closed down because tourism is obviously so important to the area. The credit crunch is affecting everyone in Stratford and you can see it just by looking at the number of people on the streets.”
