Flamboyant Folio Theft Suspect Seems to Enjoy Spotlight

Rather than acting like a man facing serious legal trouble, Raymond Scott seems to be enjoying the media attention that has followed his arrest.

After being freed on bail, Scott was interviewed at the modest three-bedroom, semi-detached home, in Washington, Tyne and Wear, he shares with his elderly mother. Sporting a Cuban cigar and a glass of Dom Perignon, Scott insisted he is an honest man who was trying to bring a new Shakespeare discovery to light. Scott says he will be meeting with his lawyers this week to discuss hiring an expert to prove the folio is not the Stolen Durham copy.

Scott claims he learned about the First Folio from three friends in Cuba, who allowed him to take it the Folger Shakespeare Library to have it authenticated. He says he started travelling to Cuba 12 years ago when he started to smoke cigars. Scott showed off a photo of shapely a 21-year-old Cuban nightclub dancer named Heidy Rios, who he says is his fiancee. “We met about eight months ago at the National Hotel of Cuba. She was dancing there, as well as at the Club Tropicana, and we got to know each other very well in a short space of time,” Scott explained. He says they plan to marry in November at the Diana Memorial Garden in Havana.

In addition to Cuba, Scott discussed vacations to Monte Carlo and Monaco. He also admitted to buying Rolex watches, Armani suits and a string of luxury cars. But Scott says he’s not rich. Instead, he claims the trips, cars and other luxury items were paid for by his mother using an inheritance left by his father, an electrical engineer, who died four years ago. Scott says also he receives an incapacity benefit and a allowance for taking care of his mother.
