Baltimore Sun theatre critic Mary Carole McCauley reports that the Baltimore Shakespeare Festival will soon hire a new artistic director or chief administrator in an effort to stabilize the organization. McCauley writes, “After a decade and a half, the company has yet to establish a real foothold in Baltimore. It continues to struggle artistically and, as a result, doesn’t attract a large audience. Many productions have been emotionally remote, or earnest and plodding.”
McCauley also discusses the challenges that many summer Shakespeare festivals, including Baltimore, deal with to make their productions happen. Union contracts, limited rehearsal hours and small budgets she writes, “Can help explain why audiences nationwide see so much bad Shakespeare during the summer.”
