The Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D.C. is offering visitors a chance to learn about 16th–century herbal lore, traditions, and remedies this summer through guided tours of its Elizabeth garden.
Inspired by gardening and herbal references in Shakespeare’s plays, the Folger opened the garden in 1989. Visitors will find plants that were popular in his time including lavender, creeping thyme, and English ivy. The area includes a knot garden, flowerbeds, trees, hedges, and sculptures evoking the characters and themes of eight of Shakespeare’s plays.
Docent tours of the Elizabethan Garden are available every third Saturday of the month, from April through October, at 10 a.m. The tour is free. No advance reservations are necessary.
Visit the Folger Shakespeare Library website for complete garden tour information.
